you don’t need an Abbey Road Studios budget for your recordings
I know that every time I am on the cusp of starting a new endeavour I begin by looking at options. And I am sure that the path to hell is paved in them. Learning to knit? Let’s have a look at all possible needles under the sun, in all sizes, all materials, by all makers. Starting to fence, with a foil not a hammer? OK, I’m gonna need a mask, a chest protector, jacket, breeches, glove, shoes, maybe a set of foils, one of epées, and a suitable bag. Horse riding? Well, I’m gonna need a hat, gloves, jodhpurs, boots, a selection of jackets, a number of tops, suitable underwear for dressage, a horse and then everything else for the horse. Must come from Hermès at a minimum. You get the idea. And these are not random examples I am making either, they are all real-life experiences. I shall skip on what turned out to be my bottom line at different times on this, in order to put the foot down hard and get you to see sense: you do not need a £10k budget in order to record yourself professionally, crisply, and beautifully every time.

dare to amp up
there are many painful and expensive ways down the path of sound
If you are even a little bit like me, a bit over-enthusiastic and full of good intentions, you may well end up spending a truckload on stuff you don’t need. If I even say drum, USB, instrument, condenser, ribbon, dynamic, and vocal, do you even know what we are talking about? Probably not. Heck, I did not know myself that all of the above are microphone types. Who gave them those names anyway?!
Gone are the days when we could stroll into a music store and could get helpful advice and direction from someone who was, not only an expert, but not paid to peddle this or that brand. You’re lucky if you even have that sort of shop close by… No probs, I hear you think, there’s always the interwebs. And that’s even worse because, before you know it, you have read 357 reviews of a set of headphones that looked perfectly adequate to begin with but now seem as appropriate to your endeavours as a pair of toeless socks. At any rate, according to Mick in Blackburn and what if he is the only sensible reviewer out of those three-hundred odd?
All of the above and then some is the reason I put together this splendid, one-stop shop to gift you with clarity of intent without bankrupting yourself.

I promise you, I was lost some years back. It did help that I was, and still am, working with a specialist sound engineer and producer who taught me an awful lot of things about sound editing and effects. Is it any wonder that they are distinct categories at the Academy Awards covering sound and music, and that in the early days editing and effects were separated? But you don’t need to stress about the plethora of finer detail that occurs at this level. You can amp up your videos with a decent microphone, interface and headphones.
